Occasionally an airplane will cut its way across the sky, and I would ask if it was might be a visitor from the distant past. I would think it must be the emperors from the Qin, Tang and Song dynasties traveling through time. Why should they stop here? They carry with them the hopes and expectations of millennia, so they must be searching for the perfect final resting place. What might they know about what has become of the world they left behind? Would they know that the land of quiet scholarly contemplation has now been replaced by a neon cityscape? This now illuminated urban landscape leaves behind only the shell of the ancient landscape upon which it has been built, bursting with the noise of modernity. Can such a cityscape “illuminate” for us the spiritual home of the ancient scholars? Are the ancient particles left from times long past still floating in today’s air? Perhaps only in our minds can we return to the quiet, empty world depicted in the classical paintings where man is in harmony with the natural universe. The absurdity of this displacement in time leads one to feel that the stars have been misaligned, and alienation between us and our visitors from ancient times would leave us with above all a strong sense of loss…and would they feel that they had ended their search too early, or too late?
